Dog food

Sky and Smokey

As a fur mom, I am constantly worried about the health of my fur babies, and I am trying my best to feed them the best food possible.

Dogs should eat grain-free foods (especially gluten-free) and organic when possible. If you have small dogs, cooking for them is easy. My dogs are medium size, so even though I cook for them, I still have to supplement with dry food because they eat a lot! My favorite kibble brand is Castor & Pollux ORGANIX Organic Chicken & Sweet Potato Recipe Grain-Free Dry Dog Food.

Cooking for your dogs is easy, and the food is healthier than anything you can buy. Like with human food, when home cooking, you have total control of the ingredients.

There are many benefits to fresh food. For starters, it can be more palatable — even the fussiest of eaters will appreciate your efforts. You have total control over what goes into each meal, and you can include higher-quality ingredients, like more protein or a greater variety of dog-safe fruits and vegetables. Beyond that, no stabilizers or preservatives are needed, so your dog won’t be eating unnecessary ingredients. You might, however, need a bigger freezer.

RECIPE

Ingredients

6.8 lbs of ground turkey meat

2 lbs chicken livers

2 lbs chicken hearts

2 lbs chicken gizzards

2.5 lbs sweet potatoes

2 lbs pumpkin

1 lb blueberries

1 lbs carrots

1 lbs peas

6 apples with skin on

5 Tbsp coconut oil

Instructions

  • Prep all your fruits and veggies, peel and chop all of them, and set them aside;

  • Prep your meats;

  • In an Insta pot, a regular pot, or use multiple pots, add equal amounts of each meat, vegetable, and fruit, and boil everything in water in batches;

  • When boiled, do not throw away the liquid as you will need every ounce for blending at the end;

  • When everything is boiled use an immersion blender to blend everything into a smooth purée. You might need several bowls and pots depending on how much quantity you make.

  • When everything is blended, allow it to cool before placing the dog food into containers;

  • Freeze the food and use it as needed!

Enjoy, pups!

What do I feed my dogs? My dogs are 65 and 50 lbs.

Breakfast: one cup of dry food, one piece of chicken jerky, and a gluten-free biscuit;

Dinner: one cup of dry food and 1/4 cup of wet homemade food.

As usual, these are my thoughts and ideas, not medical advice. You are encouraged to create your own recipes or search for some suited to your needs. I am just sharing my recipes, hoping that I can inspire some of you to make healthier food choices.
